James and Olly’s Work Experience at KW
After five days working as part of team KW, Olly and James, two Year 10 students from Caistor Grammar School, return to the blog with some reflective thoughts on their time with us…
When James and I initially heard the word "marketing," we thought that it only meant advertising, posters, and maybe some Facebook and Twitter updates. To be honest, we had no clue what it really was comprised of. But after a week of studying and dirtying our hands with it, we came to know that marketing is so much more than what appears on the surface.
It’s a whole process, a mixture of strategy, planning, creativity, and communication. It involves so many steps and tools that most people don’t even realise they’re part of marketing. From understanding your audience to choosing the right channels and crafting the message.
At the beginning, we were asked to write a blog about what we thought marketing was.
Our mind at this point was vague. We did a segment on ads and other stuff such as social media posts. Then we interviewed some of the people who are part of the marketing team. That is when everything really came together for us.
They explained to us what a typical day is like for them and outlined the key elements of marketing. We learned about clients, content writing, campaign strategies, and data analytics to see what works.
After learning the basics, we were given a task - create a campaign for a new offering, illustration and animation as a service. We made a website to demonstrate the service and how it could work for clients. We also created a pitch to propose our concept to the Knapton Wright team, and made social media posts and flyers to assist in promoting it.
This part of the project really showed us how many different elements there are to marketing. It’s not just about making things visually appealing. It’s about creating a good idea, understanding your target market, and implementing the right tools to reach them.
